You'll develop your digital art and design talent to create rich characters, environments and worlds for a variety of platforms, including computers, consoles and mobile devices.

You'll make the most of increasing demand in the creative industries for designers and artists skilled in producing rich interactive experiences with your strong conceptual game design skills and specialist art skills.

The Bachelor of Design (Games) provides specialist training and theory in computer-generated design with particular emphasis upon game theory and practice. You'll study design, narrative, imaging, modelling and animation (2D and 3D), time-based and interactive authoring and basic computing and programming.

Features

Learning and teaching

The program provides regular learning interaction with students from Bachelor of Information Technology (Games and Graphics Programming) in a studio that reflects the practice of the electronic games industry.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.

You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Program structure

Year 1

Core courses include critical game studies, media cultures, imaging and 3D modelling, introduction to programming and games design studio. A key feature is that you undertake projects and core courses with students from our Games and Graphics Programming program.

Year 2

Core courses address narrative theory and games culture, design for interactive media and the design of virtual environments. You then select specialist electives in concept art and advanced imaging, 3D character design, sound design for interactive environments, experience design or programming electives that support pathways in web3D, java and C++ programming for games development.

Year 3

Core courses address games design and analysis, games industry and professional portfolio skills. You'll produce a major project with peers working in teams with students from Bachelor of Information Technology (Games and Graphics Programming). You may then select specialist electives in advanced 3D, sound design for interactive environments, experience design or programming electives that support pathways in web3D, java and C++ programming for games development.

Honours

An Honours degree is available.

Prerequisites

Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

Selection tasks

Semester 1

Pre-selection kit: Applicants must obtain an RMIT University Games pre-selection kit online, by emailing games@rmit.edu.au or by calling +61 3 9925 8325. Applicants must submit a completed kit by 26 October 2012.

Interview (short-listed applicants only): We'll phone or email short-listed applicants in November 2012 asking them to attend an interview in November/December 2012. Overseas or interstate applicants who can't attend must email games@rmit.edu.au by 5 October 2012.

Advisory letters will be sent in December 2012.

Semester 2

Midyear intake is only for internal applicants articulating from TAFE and/or who have advanced standing allowing them to commence from semester 2 of the program. Applicants must complete and submit a pre-selection kit with their application. Short-listed applicants may be required to attend a folio presentation.

Fees

Tuition fees vary according to program and are adjusted annually.

In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government - if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Fee assistance

As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:

  • pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or
  • defer your tuition fees through the HECS-HELP loan scheme.

Other fees

You won't need to have private access to a PC, but it will be extremely useful. You are expected to buy prescribed text books. And often comprehensive printed notes are issued at a price that covers printing.

In addition to tuition fees you will also pay the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

There may be other additional expenses and administrative fees associated with your studies.

Pathways

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media may be eligible to apply for exemptions (96 credit points spread throughout the 3-year degree).
