RMIT University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, will join the Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu on the largest trade mission to India from Australia.

The Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, Louise Asher, will also take part in the visit next month.

Professor Gardner said RMIT had strong ties with India and recently hosted the Australia-India Joint Symposium on Smart Nanomaterials in Victoria, which paid tribute to Professor CNR Rao, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), India.

"A key event at the symposium was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between RMIT University and the International Centre for Materials Science in Bangalore, India," she said.

"The significant collaboration builds on RMIT's existing engagement with some of Indian's leading institutions, including the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad, the National Chemical Laboratory in Pune, the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee and the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur."

Professor Suresh K Bhargava, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Symposium Chair and RMIT Head, Advanced Materials and Industrial Chemistry, said India was a very big science power and was going to get bigger.

"Getting the right people - researchers, industry and government - together at the right time is very important. This will result in a sustainable partnership.

"I agree with Dr Megan Clark, CEO of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation (CSIRO), that 'India is absolutely at the forefront of inclusive innovation'," Professor Bhargava said.
