Metaphor in Asian cultures for understanding and relationships
Different cultures have their own favourite metaphors that provide insights into aspects of their culture. Asian cultures take quite different metaphors to "western" cultures, and the discussion of these can help us to build more effective relationships. This interactive session will enable participants to learn how they can apply metaphor to understand and engage with Asian cultures in a more creative and inclusive manner.

'Songs Bring us Together': Modes of Audience Interaction in Japan’s 'Red and White Song Contest'
Since its humble beginning in 1951 as a post-war radio show, Japan's annual Red and White Song Contest has expanded into an extravagant televised gala. Drawing on 2010 and 2011 fieldwork at the event, this paper examines the new fandom activities and digital voting methods employed by the broadcaster in order to connect with its audience and stay relevant in the 21st century.
