Entrepreneur up for national award

RMIT University's social entrepreneur in residence, Daniel Almagor, is in the running for a national award for Entrepreneur of the Year.

In a competition run by international management firm Ernst & Young, Mr Almagor, who is also RMIT's 2009 Alumnus of the Year, has been nominated for the Southern Region, which includes Melbourne.

Mr Almagor's award puts him in contention for the prestigious national award, the winner of which will be announced in November.

Mr Almagor advises and works closely with the Social Enterprise Group within the College of Business, which supports a range of business development, research and educational initiatives designed to foster solutions to the world's most pressing social problems.

He works particularly with RMIT's SEEDS program (Social and Environmental Enterprise Developments) to support the development of student social enterprises, both locally and internationally.

The program's focus is on RMIT student-led projects that are innovative, sustainable and have a positive impact upon the social and environmental needs of individuals and communities.

The Social Enterprise Group offers a Fellowship program supporting students from all parts of RMIT who have exceptional ideas for social enterprises and the drive and the determination required to bring these ideas to fruition.

Among many achievements, Mr Almagor is founder of the local chapter of a group known as Engineers Without Borders Australia, which aims to emulate the famous international medical aid group Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

Mr Almagor has a Bachelor of Engineering, with Honours, in Aerospace Engineering and a Bachelor of Business, with Distinction, in Business Administration.
