RMIT University takes a flexible approach in partnering with industry clients, in terms of our broad expertise spread across multiple disciplines and our ability to partner on large and smaller projects alike. RMIT focuses on improving business productivity and innovation through our capacity for rapid research and development, our world-standard research and testing facilities, our global reach and our large and diverse pool of researchers. The Industry Development team provide a research and development consultancy service, focused on matching the needs of clients with the appropriate part of the university.

Research excellence

The results of the 2012 Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) assessment found that RMIT was above or well above world standard in the following research areas:

  • Architecture
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • Human Movement and Sports Science
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Urban and Regional Planning

RMIT was judged to be at world standard in a further 18 groups and has the largest offshore presence of any Australian university, which gives the university an advantage in addressing global problems facing communities in globally and within Australia. RMIT demonstrates strengths in the following research areas:

RMIT has four dedicated Research Institutes representing areas of research excellence and scale:

RMIT has ten Research Centres that address social and technological challenges across a range of disciplines, including aerospace, engineering, social policy, design and finance. RMIT hosts the Australian APEC Study Centre and has Australia’s only World Health Organisation accredited Collaboration Centre for Chinese Medicine. RMIT also participates in a number of Cooperative Research Centres across a range of issues from bushfires to advanced manufacturing.

Prototyping and testing

RMIT has world-standard facilities for prototyping and product testing and collaborative research, including the state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Precinct, RMIT Textile Testing Services, the Flow Cytometry Core Facility and the recently established Clinical Research facility. Once completed, the 12,000 square metre Design Hub will strengthen Victoria’s reputation as a global centre for innovation in design by providing a space for industry-university collaboration across design-related disciplines.
