The program prepares you for managing complex advertising campaigns that are integrated with promotional activities like commercial sponsorship, sales promotion, brand, public relations and direct response.
You'll examine specific professional areas like branding theory, account management, account planning, strategy planning, media planning and agency management.
You'll do in-depth analysis of international advertising using academic and professional sources, focus on high-powered advertising strategy and process and explore broad management issues.

- Our computer facilities are equipped with cutting-edge media software. Students learn the planning and buying disciplines using these tools.
Note: While you'll study creativity in advertising, this program is not focused on producing graduates for copywriting or art direction careers. However, you can still do a number of electives that have design and other creative-based elements.
Duration
1.5 years full-time or 3 years part-time
This duration incorporates Graduate Diploma, 1 year full-time and Graduate Certificate, 6 months full-time.
Features
Learning and teaching
We run state-of-the-art media software on our computers to teach you all about the disciplines of planning and buying.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English.
You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.
Program structure
In this Master of Advertising program, you'll develop the following skills:
- conducting, using and critically evaluating research while understanding its significance for decision-making in a global communication and convergent media context
- evaluating and applying theories to devise and present advertising communication strategies and solutions based on market sectors and industry trends
- solving advertising and marketing communications problems on your own and as a interdisciplinary team member
- critically analysing and responding to the sustainable, social, technological, historical and economic changes that affect and influence the advertising and marketing communications industry
- reflecting on your own and others' practice, in relation to change, professional responsibilities and theoretical perspectives of advertising strategy
- communicating knowledge through understanding your own practice in relation to industry literature and best practice
- developing your leadership skills for contemporary and emerging advertising practices.

Professional recognition and accreditation
This program is accredited by the Media Federation of Australia (MFA) and the International Advertising Association (IAA).
The program has links with The Communications Council (previously Australian Federation of Advertising) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
Global opportunities
In June 2012, we hosted the first-ever media and communication study tour to the UK. Various students from advertising, communication, PR and communication design programs toured the University of Salford, the BBC studios and several media and advertising agencies.
Entry requirements
You must meet the University entry requirements for this type of program.
If you satisfy the following requirements you will be eligible for selection; however, there is no guarantee that you will be selected as demand for the program varies each intake.
Program entry requirements
An Australian undergraduate degree or its equivalent with a minimum 65% average. Applicants with significant work experience or professional practice in advertising or a related promotional field with a minimum of 3 years experience may also be considered.

Applicants must include in their application a statement explaining their interest in studying the program and how they feel the program will advance their career. They must also provide detail of any previous work experience in the industry and demonstrate their awareness of current global trends in persuasive communication and brand management.

Fees
This program is full fee paying only. Postgraduate tuition fees vary according to each program and are adjusted annually.
Fee assistance
The following fee assistance is available for this program:
- FEE-HELP is an optional loan scheme that assists eligible full-fee paying students to pay all or part of their tuition fees.
Other fees
There may be costs associated with field trips, specified textbooks and equipment in this program. These fees are not compulsory and you can choose to buy some of these items independently.
In addition to tuition fees there is also the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.
Some courses attract additional expenses.
