Want to work in a new and rapidly growing area of science? Consider a Bachelor of Science (Nanotechnology)/Bachelor of Science (Applied Sciences) double degree program. You get a strong grounding in nanotechnology (the science and engineering of materials less than a micrometre) across physics and chemistry, with substantial biology and engineering components.
Graduates design and engineer materials, machines and systems capable of imaging and manipulating single molecules or atoms. Graduates are valued for their broad knowledge, problem-solving and strong experimental skills.

Features
Learning and teaching
Classes are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, online reading, workshop, practical and laboratory sessions. These are primarily in English.
You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the myRMIT student portal.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Why double-up?
This 4-year double degree program is multidisciplinary, combining nanotechnology with physics or chemistry. It covers physical, chemical, biological and engineering nanoscience/nanotechnology. There's a strong emphasis on using instruments and communication.
Year 1
You'll study chemistry, physics, biology, scientific skills and mathematics and will be introduced to the diverse area of nanotechnology.
Years 2 - 4
You'll study courses in your specialisation (chemistry or physics) together with:
- genetics and immunology
- instrument design
- mathematics
- microscopy
- modelling
- neutron science
- semiconductor fabrication
- sensor technology
- spectroscopy
- synchrotron
- X-ray and light scattering.

Industry connections
To prepare you for industry employment, your science project and the 'Professional Scientist' course include lectures on the professional, legal and social aspects of work. You'll gain further experience doing short projects about, or with, a relevant organisation.

Nanotechnology graduates are in high demand for research or industry-based careers in Australia and overseas.
There are graduate shortages in the nano-enabling specialisations of chemistry, particularly polymer, colloidal, organic and bio-inorganic chemistry; materials science and engineering; microelectronics fabrication and meteorology.
Our graduates work in telecommunications, computing, defence, solar energy, medicine, aerospace, paints and coatings, cosmetics and environmental remediation. Many also complete Masters or PhD and become researchers.

Prerequisites
Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - one of Chemistry or Physics, and one of Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics, and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.
