RMIT strengthens Vietnam support

RMIT University will become a major provider of PhD, Masters and shorter training programs to Vietnamese government departments and agencies, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.

The move further strengthens RMIT's existing relationships as an education services provider to Vietnam's official agencies.

The agreement will operate under the Government's "Program 165", which provides scholarships for officials in departments and agencies working to modernise and internationalise many of Vietnam's key institutions and processes.

A signing ceremony in Melbourne was attended by a high-level delegation from Vietnam including H.E. Nguyen Tuan Khanh, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and Vice-Chair of the Central Committee of Organisation and Personnel; H.E. Hoang The Lien, Vice-Minister of Justice; Dr Nguyen Van Du, Director of Program 165 Monitoring Office; and Mrs Vu Thi Thu Hang, Vice-Head of Training Division of Program 165 Monitoring Office.

The agreement was signed on behalf of RMIT by Stephen Connelly, Deputy Vice-Chancellor International and Development and Vice-President.

This week's MoU is expected to lead to a more detailed agreement between the parties.

Some Program 165 scholarship holders have already begun studies at RMIT in Melbourne in areas including PhD (Economics and Finance), PhD (Global Studies, Social Science and Planning), PhD (Management), and Master of Social Science (International Urban and Environmental Management).

RMIT also has two campuses in Vietnam, with more than 6,000 students. It is RMIT's major centre of Asian operations.
