The Writer in an Age of Graphomania: public lecture by Linda Jaivin
RMIT StoriesNOW Creator-in-Residence, Linda Jaivin, the internationally published author of eight books, including six novels, will deliver a provocation on what it means to be a writer in a world obsessed with tweets, blogs and Fifty Shades of Whatevs. She will talk about the importance to the writer of solitude, serendipity and unsocial media.

Linda Jaivin is the author of five bestselling novels and a novella, including the comic-erotic cult classic Eat Me and her most recent book, A Most Immoral Woman. Her novel The Infernal Optimistwas shortlisted for the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal in 2007. She has also published countless short stories and essays and has had several plays produced for the stage.
Linda is also a translator (from Chinese), essayist and writer on Chinese politics and culture, which she studied at university before spending nine years in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, studying Chinese and then working as a journalist. Her previous books on China include the nonfiction The Monkey and the Dragon and New Ghosts, Old Dreams: Chinese Rebel Voices, an anthology of translations co-edited with Geremie Barmé. Linda is a Creator-in-Residence at RMIT. She is also a visiting fellow in the School of Culture, History and Language at the College of Asia & the Pacific at the Australian National University.
