You must:

  • Completed at least one full year of studies at home institution.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 or 60% or equivalent.

What can I study?

You can design your own program by selecting courses from cross any of RMIT’s disciplines as long as you have the necessary prerequisites. RMIT offers diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Courses of diploma programs are best suited to students from community colleges, vocational or technical institutions.

  • Choose up to eight courses on the application form in case some are not available
  • Ensure the selected courses are available in your preferred semester and campus
  • All selected courses should be taught at the same campus (RMIT has three campuses in Melbourne), however due to close proximity, it may be possible to select mixture of courses between Brunswick and City campuses.

How do I apply?

There are two ways of applying for RMIT University's Study Abroad program:

Option 1. Apply via an Overseas Representative

You can apply via one of RMIT University's many registered representatives including the IDP Group. These representatives are knowledgeable about the University and the Australian Education system. Some representatives also provide a range of services including visa application.

Option 2. Direct Entry - Paper based (preferred method)

You can return your completed application form (PDF 583Kb 4p), along with supporting documents by post to the Education Abroad Office.

Please note that there is no application fee for exchange or study abroad even though you agree to this in the very first screen, once you move through the process you will not be asked to pay a fee.

Application approval

Once your application has been received, if all is correct and you are eligible, your study plan will be forwarded to the relevant academics at RMIT for approval. This process may take a few weeks.

Receiving an offer

A list of pre-approved courses will be sent to you in your offer letter. While you have been pre-approved for these courses, your enrolment will take place during your orientation at RMIT and is subject to timetable availability and any last minute changes.

Accepting your offer

In order to accept your offer, you will be required to return your acceptance form and pay the Study Abroad fee. You must also include the payment details for your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You must purchase this insurance in order to obtain your student visa.

Note: You do not need OSHC if you are a Norwegian Insurance Scheme cover holder or a Swedish national with cover through Swedish National Board of student Aid (CSN).

Once the health insurance has been processed, RMIT will send you an electronic confirmation of enrolment and from here on you are eligible to apply for a student visa.

How much does it cost?

Tuition fees

The standard fee for the 2012 Study Abroad Program is AU $9840 per semester. Fees may increase each year. The fee remains the same regardless of whether you enroll in 36 credit points (3 courses) or 48 credit points (4 courses) for the semester.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Cost of living

Cost of living can vary according to the type of accommodation, the number of people living in the accommodation and the location.

Currency converter

You can use a currency converter to calculate the amount in your own currency. Remember to add your program fees and airfares to get a realistic total.

  • Do not depend on income from part-time work to pay your expenses. Jobs may be difficult to find in Australia.
  • Some expenses are not included in this table because actual costs depend on your lifestyle and preferences.
  • Gas and electricity costs are higher in winter because heating is necessary.
  • Most rental agreements are for a minimum of 12 months and are based on a lease agreement signed by the tenant (you) and the owner of the property.
