Health and Safety Appreciation Event 2008
The University is hosting its annual Appreciation Event, on the 19 November 2008, to recognise all those who volunteer their time in the roles of wardens, first aiders and health and safety representatives. This year the theme is:
RMIT Health and Safety Awards offer schools and non-academic business units an ideal way of showing their commitment to health and safety and appreciation to staff in volunteer roles.
The RMIT Health and Safety Awards celebrates its fourth year, and this year we aim to reward and recognise our“health and safety superheroes” in a range of different categories.
Awards Overview
The awards recognise individuals and groups contributing to raising health and safety standards across the University through their hard work.
The winners will receive their awards at the Health and Safety Appreciation Recognition Event held on 19 November at Storey Hall. Our aim is to enter the recipients in to the 2009 WorkSafe Awards for their respective categories.

This year’s awards include the following categories:
Health and Safety Committee of the Year
The Health and Safety Committee of the Year category acknowledges a committee that has demonstrated achievement in its role through a high level of commitment to health and safety and a high level of consultation in the workplace.
Entries for Health and Safety Committee of the Year are accessed against the following criteria:
- Commitment: How does the committee demonstrate commitment to their role?
- Consultation: How does the committee foster consultation in the workplace?
- Representation: How well does the Committee represent its constituents?
- Achievements: What are the achievements of the committee, and how did they overcome barriers to attaining these achievements?
Health and Safety Representative of the Year
The Health and Safety Representative of the Year category acknowledges health and Safety representatives who have made a difference to health and safety within their designated work group. Representatives should, preferably, be nominated by members of their designated work group.
Entries for Health and Safety Representatives of the Year are assessed against the following criteria.
- Commitment: How does the HSR demonstrate commitment to HIS/HER role?
- Consultation: How does the HSR foster consultation in the workplace?
- Representation: How well does the HSR represent his or her designated work group?
- Achievements: What are the achievements of the HSR, and how did they overcome barriers to attaining these achievements?
Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk
The Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk Award category is for an innovation in workplace health and safety that eliminates or significantly reduces a risk. This could include changes to the work environment, new equipment, engineering or design solution, or an entirely new work process.
Entries for the category of Best Solution to a Health and Safety Risk will be assessed against the following criteria:
- Transferability: What is the potential for wider application?
- Innovation: How does this advance safety?
- Risk Control: How well does the control measure work?
- Commitment: What commitment to occupational health and safety is evident in the innovation/invention?
- Consultation: How were employees involved in the development of the innovation/invention?
Outstanding Service – First Aider
The Outstanding Service First Aider Award is presented to person or persons who have performed a courageous act in an attempt to help an individual who was injured or to individuals who unselfishly rendered service in a time of an emergency.
This award will be selected by representatives of RMIT Emergency Planning Committee based on incidents over the year and the involvement of first aiders.
Best Fire Evacuation
The award for Best Fire Evacuation is based on results of the Building Evacuations which are organised and scored by Property Services. The winner of the shield is the building with the highest score on completion of the evacuation schedule.
Evacuations are based on the following criteria:
- Reaction of staff and students
- Reaction of wardens
- Sufficient wardens present
- Wardens easily identified
- Time taken to evacuate all occupants
- Awareness of and relocation to assembly areas
- Emergency response equipment functioning
- Facilities for the disabled
- Areas secured to prevent re-entry during emergency
- Emergency exits cleared and controlled
