Statute 5.5 - Admission to honorary degrees

1. The Council may admit honoris causa any person to any degree of the University in recognition of a distinguished contribution to learning, eminent public service or outstanding cultural achievement.

2(a). A candidate for admission to a degree under section 1 will be presented at a conferring ceremony, by such person as the Council may appoint, who will cite the grounds for admission;

(b) In exceptional circumstances an honorary degree may by resolution by the Council be conferred in absentia or posthumously.

3. No fees will be payable for admission to any degree under this Statute.

4. A degree conferred under this Statute will bear the designation in the abbreviated form prefixed by the abbreviation “Hon”.

5. Regulations made pursuant to this Statute will come into effect when displayed on the university’s Statutes and Regulations Website.
