The Chiropractic Unit - Excellence in Education

The mission of The Chiropractic Units is to benefit society by educating chiropractors so they may acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to function as primary contact, primary health care practitioners providing quality care to people and contributing effectively as members of the health care professions.

The Units are committed to the advancement of the discipline of chiropractic through scholarship and research by fostering critical thinking and the use of the scientific method throughout their educational programs.

Formal chiropractic education in Melbourne dates from 1975 when the International College of Chiropractic was set up as a private venture supported by the profession. In a world first for chiropractic, it was fully absorbed into mainstream university level education when the Australian Government recognised the program and granted funding support to it in 1980 as part of the then Preston Institute of Technology, later Phillip Institute, now the Bundoora West campus of RMIT.

The successor to this endeavour is The Chiropractic Unit - Melbourne which is responsible for delivering the undergraduate program at the RMIT Bundoora West campus for on-shore students, and for managing postgraduate coursework and research students both on and off-campus.

The Chiropractic Unit - Japan, located in Tokyo, is responsible for delivering the first professional degree programs in Japan. It was established and operates by agreement between RMIT and the Japanese Chiropractic Association (JCA).

The Association, which has a rich thirty-four year history, began its quest to establish chiropractic education in Japan in 1988. The agreement with RMIT in 1994, establishing The Chiropractic Unit - Japan, fulfils the Association’s goal of making full chiropractic professional education available in Japan.
