Being Asian in Australia and the United States
This presentation discusses the almost completed ARC Discovery project, "Being Asian in Australia and the United States". The research examined Asian groups in Australia and the US with the aim of identifying points of connection and difference that will strengthen our understanding of race relations, national identities and globalised cultures. By focusing on a range of cultural activities in visual arts, popular culture, community celebration and academia, the research extended current knowledge about how Asian identities emerge in response to different histories of managing cultural diversity in the West. Knowing how diasporic communities feel ‘at home’ also illuminates the ways in which they may feel disenfranchised, thus advancing knowledge about the relationship between ethnicity, transnationalism and cultural citizenship.

Media, Participation and development: Valuing Voice and Listening
My current research is focusing on how media and new communication technologies can help give people a voice, and lead to meaningful participation in development activities. At the heart of this project, is a series of close studies and applied research with community based media and information and communication technology (ICT) activities in India and Nepal. In going about this research I am trying:
- To describe the processes involved in valuing voice (viz. processes of listening, responding to voice, acting upon voice) and unpack their distinctive contributions.
- To understand when and how a fuller valuing of voice and listening can make effective contributions to development outcomes.
- To describe and develop qualitative indicators to measure the principles and practices underlying such processes of valuing voice and listening, and see if it is possible to measure ‘meaningful participation’.
- To consider the implications of different contexts and different media and media uses on processes of valuing voice and listening.
