How much can I copy?

All photocopying is subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act 1968.

The Copyright Act states that, for the purposes of research or study, it is reasonable to photocopy:

  • From a single journal issue:
    • One article or more if the article taken is for a different area of research, or a different course of study,
    • Two or more articles, if they relate to the same subject area.
  • From a book that is more than 10 pages long (and is not an artistic work):
    • 10% of the total number of pages, or
    • The whole or part of a single chapter (even if that one chapter exceeds 10% of the total number of pages).
  • From an electronic work:
    • 10% of the total number of words in the work
    • The whole or part of a single chapter if the electronic work is clearly divided into chapters.

It may be possible to copy more under the ‘fair dealing’ provision for research or study purposes. To find out if this applies to your case, refer to the criteria set out in sub-section 40 (2) of the Copyright Act 1968.

There are copyright information guides available if you need more information.

By the way…

Always press FINISH at the end of your photocopying session, unless you don’t mind sharing your account with others.
